I love coffee. I drink coffee all the time. Since I started taking Byetta last week my consumption of coffee has not caused any difference in my sugar levels. That is until I had a cup of Starbucks Verona Italina coffee (my favorite). I checked my sugar approximately 2 hours after eating lunch and my levels have been around 100 at that time. The day I had a cup of Verona and checked my sugar it was 154. Hhhmmmm.... I thought this was just a coincidence. The next two days I had regular Folgers coffee and my sugar levels were fine; right were they were supposed to be. Today after lunch we didnt have any Folgers so I made a pot of Verona and had a cup. Checked my sugar at 2 hours after lunch and guess what? Sugar was at 148.
So, I am thinking there must be something in the process when they make Verona that makes it extra sweet. Has anyone else ever had that problem? I would like to hear how coffee has affected your sugar levels. Maybe it is just my imagination.........maybe not.
Will continue to "expirement" and report back..............

I Am Back
Hi... after over a years absence I am back here. What happened? A lot ... too much to go into here but safe to say I have had my struggles with diabetes over the past year or so since my last post. So I will pick back up where I left off with my daily life with diabetes.
Good news....... I have started using a fairly new diabetes drug called Byetta and let me tell you it is a miracle drug. At least for me it is. My sugar levels had gotten out of control again with my daily average being around 160..... way to high. Anyway.. I started on byetta last week and immediately within hours my sugar started to drop. 5mg twice a day 30 minutes before my two largest meals. I don't use it at breakfast because that is a small meal. By the way I have started eating breakfast ...... hadnt been doing that. I use it before lunch and dinner. My sugar levels 2 hours after I eat now average 90-100. At the doctors recommendation I have also stopped taking my Glipizide. I still take my Glucophage.
A side effect of Byetta is weight loss. It keeps me feeling full and I dont eat as much. The first week of use I have lost 3 pounds. Will it last long term? Time will tell but 7 days later and I ame extremely happy. I did a 7 day average check and it is 131. Hasn't been that low for years.
So.....with all that said..... I am back and feeling good.

Digging Holes To Lower Blood Sugar Levels
We have all heard that exercise is one of the best things a diabetic can do to help control sugar levels. Walking is what most people do, some run, others swim; I dig holes.
You heard correctly. I have been digging holes the past several days and have had some remarkable results. It all started when I tried to remove an old clothes line pole from my back yard. The temperature here in Kentucky has been between 100 and 110 for the last ten days or so. It doesn't take much to start a good sweat. I broke out the shovel and started to dig around the base of the pole. The ground is very hard as we have had no rain for almost a month. It didn't take much digging to start sweating. After about 20 minutes of digging I realized I was getting nowhere. The hole was about 3 feet deep and a couple feet wide. To my amazement I ran into solid concrete at about 3 feet. Whoever put this pole in did not intend for it to ever come out. To make a long story short, I have worked on that hole for 3 days...... Pole is still in the ground and bent. Someone is coming with a truck to pull it out.
What was remarkable is that my sugar levels dropped each time I went out to dig. I have been digging around mid morning when it is a cool 95 degrees and each time I am soaked with sweat by the time I come inside. My sugar is around 80 to 90 instead of the normal 120-150. This morning I went out to where our garden plot is and started digging. We did not have a garden this year due to travel and other things that took our time up. The plot had grown over with grass and I decided instead of using a tiller to dig it up by hand. I spent 20 minutes with shovel in hand digging away and sure enough...... When I went outside about an hour after breakfast and worked my sugar went from 190 to 90.
I am going to keep doing this....... I know it may sound kind of lame, but it works for me. Plus I need to start preparing for next years garden anyway. So there is my diabetic workout tip..... Spend 20 minutes a day in hot weather digging a hole.
Cheers Eric

A1C Drops Almost 3 Points
Got the results from my latest labs back yesterday. A1c is down from 9.9 percent to 7.1 percent. Sugar levels have been averaging around 150. That is still a little high but nowhere near where it was. Doctor says if I am not at 110 average in next 90 days it will be time for insulin.
Come a long way.......have a long way to go.
